You can count on baking, home-produced foods and lovingly prepared dishes among life’s most simple and delicious pleasures. Combermere Abbey, five star award-winning holiday cottages, are now combining a two night stay with a hands-on course at Maynard’s Farm Barn, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire.

Maynard’s Farm Barn offers two courses, ‘An Introduction to Artisan Breadmaking with Craig Sandiford’ and ‘Butchery and Curing with Rob Cunningham’. Maynard’s home cured bacon has the prestige of being used by Rick Stein and being among his 50 ‘Top Food Heroes’, as well as being distributed by the likes of Waitrose and Harvey Nichols.

Succumb to the joy of kneading, shaping and rolling, exploring traditional bread making with Craig. Local ingredients such as Pimhill Organic stoneground wholemeal flour and Mr Moyden’s butter are used and baked in a traditional wood-fired oven. Craig followed his heart into this new career path, leaving behind a financial role in the motor industry.   

Rob Cunningham, the Farm’s co-owner curiously was a property developer in London, before returning to his first passion of agriculture and in particular, pig farming. He runs the Butchery and Curing course and he will guide you through the butchery skills to present a side of pork, as well as making your own sausages and dry curing bacon.
