Dorothy Clive Garden to host 2nd Annual Chilli Festival

The Dorothy Clive Garden is to host a 2nd Annual Chilli Festival - including a Chilli Eating Contest - on Sunday 29th September 2013 from 11am to 5pm as a special fundraising event for the garden.

The event will include talks and demonstrations about chillies and spices by TV presenter, chef, spice expert and culinary adventurer Emma Grazette; a chilli planting and propagation workshop by resident gardener, and chilli enthusiast, Zdenek Valkoun-Walker; a chilli market selling plants, seeds, oils, sauces, chutneys, jams, drinks and spices; a fire breathing display; live music from Synergy Live Band; a Salsa Marquee with salsa dancing; yoga; henna body decoration; and spice inspired colouring and activities for children.

There will also be the ‘Joules Brewery Chilli Eating Contest’ at the Festival. Up to fifteen contestants will be able to enter the contest, which is open to the general public. Each contestant must chew and eat a whole chilli to be able to move onto the next round until one person remains and is crowned the winner. Entrants must declare by 3pm on the day to be able to take part *. The winner will be awarded with a 4.5 gallon box of Joules Ale, two tickets for a brewery tour of Joules Brewery in Market Drayton, as well as dinner for two at Mirchi Restaurant in Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent. The runner up will receive a selection of chutneys from The Kitchen Fine Foods Company. The chillies to be used in the contest have been grown by the Dorothy Clive Garden and include varieties such as: Rocoto Rojo, Chocolate Bhut Jolokia, Satan’s Kiss, Crystal Aji and the world’s hottest chilli - the Trinidad Scorpion Morouga Red at over 2,000, 000 SHU!

Emma Grazette will also be judging the ‘True Blue Bay Best Chilli Sauce Contest’ and will be looking for the sauce with the best flavour, texture and blend. The lucky winner of the ‘True Blue Bay Best Chilli Sauce Contest’ will win a fantastic luxury 7 night bed and breakfast stay for two in the boutique ‘True Blue Bay Hotel’ on the Caribbean spice island of Grenada*, in the Caribbean.

Barn India and the Mirchi - two local Indian restaurants - will also be offering special discount vouchers at the event, as part of a promotion for their restaurants.

Admission to this special fundraising event will be £3.50 per adult, free for children between 0-4 and £2.00 for children over 4 and under 18 years and. Members are the Dorothy Clive Garden are admitted for free. The event will start at 11am and end at 5.00pm, however, the garden will be open from 10.00am to 5.30pm on the day. The garden will then be open every weekend in October from 10am to 4pm.
